Abstract: How can we harness the creative power of gender analysis for discovery and innovation? In this talk I identify three strategic approaches to gender in research, policy, and practice: 1) "Fix the Numbers of Women" focuses on increasing women's participation; 2) "Fix the Institutions" promotes gender equality in careers through structural change in research organizations; and 3) "Fix the Knowledge" or "Gendered Innovations" stimulates excellence in science and technology by integrating sex and gender analysis into research. This talk focuses on the third approach. I will discuss several case studies, including gender, ethnicity, and fairness in machine learning, and gendering social robots. To match the global reach of science and technology, Gendered Innovations was developed through a collaboration of over a hundred experts from across the United States, Europe, Canada, and Asia. Major funders for Gendered Innovations include the European Commission, the U.S. National Science Foundation, and Stanford University.
